Juvenile Diabetes

Juvenile diabetes is the common name given to Type 1 Diabetes. Diabetes typically takes one of two forms. Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is the more serious condition that most often manifest during childhood and requires a treatment regiment centered on the use of insulin injections. Type 2 Diabetes, on the other hand, typically does not manifest itself until adulthood and is thought to be caused by obesity and genetics.

Facts About Juvenile Diabetes

  • When the pancreas stops producing, or limits the production of, insulin-producing beta cells, the body goes into a state of insulin deficiency – the cause of juvenile diabetes.
  • Roughly 10 percent of all diabetic cases are of juvenile diabetes.
  • Although research continues, as of yet there is still no known cause or cure for juvenile diabetes. Treatment, however, has come a long way, including the use of an insulin pump for convenient administration of proper insulin levels.
  • Although most often referred to as juvenile diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes can begin during adulthood too.
  • The essential treatment regiment is to replace your body’s loss of insulin and regularly monitor your blood sugar levels.
