What Causes Diabetes?

Nobody knows exactly what causes diabetes to develop in one person but not the next. Although there are theories for what conditions trigger the disease, such as improper insulin production, nobody knows what triggers the conditions themselves. In their ongoing research, however, medical experts have come a long way in better understanding the possible causes of diabetes.

Possible Causes of Diabetes

  • It is generally agreed that diabetes is present at birth, meaning genetic predisposition is a leader for causes of diabetes.
  • Various viral infections, such as meningitis, trigger a process that may cause diabetes in some who suffer from Type 1 Diabetes.
  • When the body experiences any type of malfunctioning of the pancreas’ insulin producing process, whether caused by a virus or not, Type 1 Diabetes is likely to develop.
  • Obesity and being overweight in general is one of the leading causes of Type 2 Diabetes (click to learn about a better diabetes diet)
  • A diet that is extremely high in carbohydrates.
  • Any form of prolonged nutritional deficiencies.

What Aren’t Causes of Diabetes?

  • One thing for certain is diabetes cannot be transferred from one person to another.
  • Eating too much sugar or sugar-based foods are not believed to be causes of diabetes.
  • Stress in and of itself is not believed to cause diabetes.
